THE STORY OF THE WINDRUSH by KANDACE CHIMBIRI
BOOK LAUNCH SATURDAY 13TH OCTOBER (@ JURYS INN CROYDON)
PART OF THE CSEP ANNUAL LITERARY FEST
Marking the 70th anniversary, ‘The Story of the Windrush’ is written by K.N. Chimbiri, for children aged seven upwards. It tells the true-life story of families relocating from the Caribbean to bolster the workforce in post-war Britain, between 1948 and 1971.
Coining their name from the MV Empire Windrush ship that carried workers to Tilbury Docks in Essex, the compelling read is sensitively and beautifully written for a young audience, telling the story through Sam King - the first Black mayor of Southwark.
Kandace Chimbiri, author of ‘The Story of the Windrush’, said: “Windrush has captured headlines and hearts throughout the country for its inspiring and enduring story. My family is from Barbados and I was born in London, allowing me to give an authentic and credible voice to this story, for a new generation to discover.
“With Windrush recently making the news again, it’s important for children to understand this important part of British and Black history, and the legacy that our foreparents left.”
The easy-to-read text and colourful illustrations feature; photos, maps, artwork and a glossary of terms, to explain the history behind the headlines and expand children’s knowledge and interest in the subject. It’s ideal for children who are confident readers, able to tackle complex information that provoke questions and thinking.
This is the fourth book by K.N. Chimbiri, who writes with passion and heart. Her aim is to improve children's literacy as well as their knowledge of Black history.
The launch of this book coincides with Black History Month and is presented by Croydon Supplementary Education Project (CSEP) as part of its YEAR LONG LITERARY FEST which celebrates Black History, Arts and Culture.
