About this Event

The

The Uyghur people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (East Turkistan) have faced ever increasing erosion in there human rights and freedoms. Branded as extremists and terrorists for even the smallest of acts, like growing a beard. They are locked up en mass in vast 're-education centers' which are a nice way of saying detention camps.

So many Uyghur people are being sent to these camps that often it is leaving children as orphans which unsurprisingly the Chinese government has an answer to, the vast orphanages where they are sending these Uyghur children in there thousands, is to be 're-educated' where sadly I'm sure China will have much higher success rate as these are just tiny scared children.

Not only are the Uyghur people one of the most persecuted ethnic groups in there own homeland but even fleeing to other countries, some countries, Muslim countries i might add, will detain them on the orders of the Chinese government and then deport them back to China.

Even in the West, China uses its influence and resources to monitor and harass Uyghur refugees.

We must raise awareness of these human rights abuses going on by one of most powerful countries in the world today. We must campaign and urge our elected representatives to take a stand and challenge the Chinese government.

Aziz Isa Elkun is a Uyghur activist who fled China and now lives in the UK. He spends much of his free time promoting the Uyghur people blight. He is also a film maker and poet. And I'm honored that he can come to Leicester and talk to us about the issue his people face and what life is like for the Uyghur people not just in China but across the world.
