Description

October's Sustainability Social: Make One Change (for the planet)...

Winchester Sustainable Businesses (WSB) together with Open House Deli - striving to become Winchester's only zero waste kitchen and café - are proud to present the next Sustainability Social all about individual climate action. As part of Winchester Green Week, we want as many people as possible to #makeonechange for the planet.

What is the Sustainability Social? It's a monthly gathering for change makers who care about the planet and want to make a difference. Whether you own a business, work for one or just spend your hard earned cash with one - so that's all of us, then - you'll be welcome to come and join us for an informal, fun evening in the relaxed surroundings of the Open House Deli.

We hope to inform, inspire and collectively begin to make an impact. Here's what you can expect...

Inform: High profile campaigns such as the Climate Strike and Extinction Rebellion, and the people such as the inspirational Greta Thunberg have brought climate change to the front of the conversation. The pressure on governments and business to act hs never been greater, but what about us as individuals? It can be hard to know what to do first, and we can all feel a little overwhelmed at times. You'll hear from Paul Coverdale, founder of WSB, about his own climate change journey and how and why it led him to starting the Sustainable Business community here.

Inspire: Paul will also tell you about the Make One Change pledging campaign he has set up with a wonderful business called DoNation. Its an online platform that as the name suggests asks you to make a 'donation'. Rather than making a financial contribution for a cause, you pledge to change your lifestyle in some way that will lessen your impact on the planet. So far, more than 18,000 people have made 55,000 pledges resulting in a collective saving of 3.9 million tonnes of CO2 in the 10 years since its launch. Pretty impressive stuff! It shows how added up together small changes can make a real impact. Speaking of which...

Impact: Conversations about sustainability are really important but meaningless without action! That's why we would really like everybody who comes along to the Social to make at least one pledge. Small actions really do add up to make a big difference. Some are really easy; others take a bit more effort, but every one helps our environment, health, or wellbeing. There are 59 to choose from in 5 groups: food, travel, home, lifestyle and work and they can be as simple as pledging to walk more or to only fill your kettle with the water you need.

We'll be introducing some of the pledges - there's not time for them all! - with a fun interactive quiz and explaining how the campaign works.

During Green Week we're aiming for 250 pledges in total so please, join us and #makeonechange (or two or five)! Paul has already started the campaign off with the Do More pledge to get us going....

You'll have plenty of opportunity to meet and connect with each others in the community too. There will be a selection of Open House Deli's delicious coffee, tea, drinks and cakes available to sample, and you can browse the growing range of zero waste household goods too. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Winchester Sustainable Businesses Community is a place to collectively work together to tackle the challenges facing businesses and their people that want to be more sustainable. Through learning and collaboration in an open, inclusive, environment, we can start to innovate and generate ideas. You'll hopefully be catalysed into taking the first steps to changing the way your business does business. We look forward to seeing you.
