About this Event

“AN EXAMINATION OF SEX VERSUS GENDER IDENTITY IN THE GENERAL MEDICAL COUNCIL'S TRANS HEALTHCARE ETHICAL GUIDANCE”

Speaker: Dr Sara Dahlen, MBBS, BSc (Hons), DPMSA

Sydney Selwyn Prize Winner

How ought doctors approach communication around a patient's biological sex when it is incongruent with their gender identity? What does 'sex' mean in the medical record? This lecture will apply a 'Four Principles' analysis to two points in the GMC's ethical advice on Trans health, attempting to identify potential areas of moral tension in professional obligations for medical practitioners.

and

“MEDICAL HUMANITARIANISM - DO MOTIVES MATTER?”

Speaker: Professor Anthony Redmond, OBE

Sydney Selwyn, High Commendation

Humanitarian, as a description of a person or action, probably began in the West in the early 19th century with William Wilberforce and the abolition of the slave trade, and to have become more codified, and include medical assistance, in the mid-19thcentury with the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Geneva Conventions that followed shortly afterwards. A humanitarian act now implies adherence to International Humanitarian Law and the “Humanitarian Principles” and has evolved, particularly amongst those involved, to also mean emergency assistance as distinct from longer term development aid.
