The Symbolic and Real Meaning of Money in Therapy

A one-day seminar with Christiane Sanderson

Dublin, 28 October 2017, Saturday

10.00 am – 4.00 pm

What does money mean, both inside and outside the therapeutic space  -  for clients and therapists?  Money is imbued with myriad symbolic meanings which reflect our identity, self-worth, value system and ethical professional practice, and yet is rarely discussed in therapy other than the setting and payment of fees.

This workshop looks at the real and symbolic meaning of money for both client and clinician, and the challenges around setting appropriate fees; when to offer a reduced rate or sliding scale; managing payment terms and cancellation penalties, when and how to increase fees and how to navigate these dilemmas effectively and ethically. It will also explore the relationship between money and power, pride, shame, envy, greed, transference and counter-transference and a range of defence mechanisms to identify how these impact on the therapeutic relationship. Consideration will also be given to work with couples who may have differing beliefs and values around money and its management.

Through a number of experiential exercises, participants will be invited to look at their own relationship to money and what it means to them, how this reflects their sense of worth and value in how fees are set, and how it impacts their professional practice.  In addition, several ethical dilemmas around money will be presented which participants will be encouraged to explore and debate. Throughout the workshop, participants will be encouraged to talk about their own relationship to money and overcome the shame and silence that prevents them from talking about money and explore how it can help or hinder the therapeutic relationship.

Specifically, we will consider:

  • Navigating the money minefield – the value we place on our therapy provision and whether our clients agree with this assessment
  • The process by which we set fees and payment terms – what considerations require our attention and which ones don’t
  • How clients perceive our monetary stance
  • The symbolism of parting with and accepting money
  • Money – and its clash with our defence systems
  • The ethical choices we face around money as practising therapists
  • Reducing potential ruptures in the therapeutic relationship
