Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

The aim of this project is to support schools across Poole to work effectively with pupils who are currently struggling with their social skills, self-esteem or friendship skills.

What is TALKABOUT?

  • It uses a hierarchical approach to teaching social skills
  • It includes an assessment a system for measuring outcomes
  • It includes activities and term plans for teachers to follow
  • It was written by Alex Kelly following her research into social skills in 1994

As part of the project you will receive:

  • a day’s training course by Alex Kelly on Wednesday 14th March
  • Talkabout resources for your school worth £75.00 approx.
  • 2 follow up visits from a member of the Alex Kelly Ltd team

In return, you will deliver a TALKABOUT social skills group in your school for 6 pupils for a period of 20 weeks. We will support you to analyse the assessment data to demonstrate impact of the project in your school. We are aiming to replicate the results of a 5 year project (2011-2016) in Wales which (funded by Big Lottery) and which assessed the impact of Talkabout in over 600 schools across Wales. In this study, all schools saw progress in the identified pupils in terms of their social skills, self-esteem and friendship skills but they also saw other benefits of the programme in terms of behaviour and attitude to school.

The training days

Two members of staff from your school will attend a day’s training course on social skills run by Alex Kelly on Wednesday 14th March . The day will introduce you to the theory behind teaching social skills and to help you answer the 3 key questions: Where do you start? What do you do? How can you show that you have been effective? You will then become the ‘Talkabout Tutors’ for your school. The training day will include:

  • An introduction to social skills
  • Planning where to start a video practical exercise
  • The theory behind the hierarchy of skills
  • Assessment of social skills and self-esteem
  • Effective intervention the different strategies to teach social skills
  • How to set up and run a social skills group
