This talk looks at the work of John F Carrington, a 20th century missionary who studied and wrote about the talking drums of the Congo basin. The technology of the drum illustrates many aspects of the modern theory of communication such as redundancy and managing a name space.

Speaker biography

John Baxter has a PhD and BSc in Physics, he spent his working life in IT as a solution designer and project manager, mainly in telecoms applications. John is a u3a Trust Volunteer and is Subject Adviser for Climate Change and Environment.
