The team approach to the Equine Olympics - what can we learn?
Thu 10 November 2016, 19:30 – 21:30 GMT
Whether you are a happy hack or heading for the Olympics, it takes a team to keep your horse fit for the job: vets, farriers, physios, saddlers and many more all contribute to the end result.
We have invited 2 speakers with great first hand experience of the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and other elite equine sporting events, as well as day to day experience of helping horses and riders at every level of the sport. They will entertain us with their experiences and help us see how working as a team at every level is best for horse and rider.
Karen Coumbe is an equine veterinary surgeon and director of one of the largest specialist equine hospitals in the country, Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic. You may recognise her as she is a regular author for Horse and Hound's Veterinary Pages, where she writes brilliantly informative articles drawn from years of experience as a first and second opinion vet to horses of all types, from the happy hack to the elite athlete. Karen has years of experience as an FEI vet and was part of the team of treating vets at the Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics.
Russell Guire is the founder of Centaur biomechanics, a company which provdes consultancy and research into horse and rider biomechanics and performance analysis. A large proportion of Centaur's research has been based around saddle fit and design and the relationship between saddle fit and horse's movement. In 2010 Centaur formed part of the research team behind the Fairfax Performance Girth, termed Team GB's Secret Weapon at the London 2012 games. As well as these projects Centaur has carried out studies looking at rider's position, surfaces, massage systems, studs and training aids.
