The Temporal Self: Towards a Unified View of Time and Identity in Coaching
In the early days of coaching, it all seemed so simple.
The past was for therapists whose axis was the past-present. We coaches dealt with what change lies ahead - our axis was the present-future.
If only clients could see it our way, all would be fine and dandy!
But of course, clients are people and people bring a relationship to all dimensions of their temporal experience - their past, present and future. Whatsmore, it's pretty clear that the three are intrinsically connected, not just in terms of the space-time continuum (something we coaches can do little about, yet!), but in the meaning-making, existential-experiential processes that sit behind how people make sense of, and shape, their story at it happens through time.
In this talk, Nick Bolton, founder of Animas, will take you on a discursive exploration of time in coaching and how, as coaches, we can work with our clients with a unifying lens over one's timeline.
Exploring theoretical and psychological conceptions of human-time as well as his own practice of coaching which seeks to draw out self-concept as formed over and through time, Nick will offer news ways to think about what your clients share with you and perhaps new ways to think of your own experience.
Building on, and significantly expanding, ideas first explored by Nick in 2014/2015 in his talks on "Time and Timelessness in Coaching" and "Working with the Self in Coaching", Nick will be bringing some of his latest thinking to this talk.
