About this event
TanSuo Cultural Travel specialises in tours that take you off the beaten track in China. We pride ourselves on the extensive knowledge and cultural understanding of our travel experts, who will accompany you on your tour. Every fortnight on a Wednesday evening, we offer a free seminar on a certain topic related to Chinese culture.
Please Note: Instead of a Chinese culture seminar, this week's slot will be taken up with a 1-hour-long travel presentation.
In-keeping with our desire to promote the ethnic minority groups of China and to thus help them preserve their cultures, we've dedicated this presentation to the Tibetan ethnic minority.
The Tibetan people predominantly live in the regions of Tibet, Qinghai province, and Sichuan province, which are all located in western China. Large parts of these regions once made up the ancient Kingdom of Tibet, which itself was divided into the three regions of Ü-Tsang, Kham, and Amdo. To this day, many Tibetan communities differentiate themselves based on which part of the ancient kingdom their ancestors originated from, as each area has its own unique culture and customs.
For example, the Khampa Tibetan men are renowned for their skill at horse-riding, while it is the Ü-Tsang Tibetans who are perhaps most well-known for their devoutness to Tibetan Buddhism. This deep sense of faith and spirituality is arguably what the Tibetan people are most well-known for, but you may be surprised to hear that Tibetan Buddhism was not the first indigenous religion to come out of Tibet!
Join us as we take a closer look at the history and culture behind the Tibetan people. We guarantee you'll learn something new about this fascinating and enigmatic ethnic group!
