Description

Is it time to reform our divorce laws?

Join our top-level debate chaired by Sir James Munby, taking place at The News Building on the evening of Monday, September 24.

The justice secretary David Gauke has just announced his intention to consult on reforming the divorce laws in what would be the biggest shake-up of marriage laws for 50 years.

His consultation paper would remove the need for couples to indulge in a "blame game" or wait for at least two years to divorce; and suggests a minimum time-frame of six months for the process, to give couples time to reflect.

Mr Gauke has said he wants to press ahead and legislate "as soon as Parliamentary time permits." He acknowledges the need for wider reform - such as on how courts make financial orders on divorce - but says that future change should be founded on a revised process that minimises the need for conflict.

The panel chaired by Sir James Munby, former President of the Family Division of the High Court of England and Wales will discuss the proposals for reform - on which comments are invited by December 10.

The panel will include:

Sir Paul Coleridge, Chairman of Marriage Foundation
Lord Mackay of Clashfern, former Conservative Lord Chancellor
Lucy Frazer, Minister for Justice
Rod Liddle, columnist, The Sunday Times
Professor Liz Trinder, Professor of Socio-legal Studies, Exeter University

Doors open at 6pm for a 6:30pm start.
