Event description
The Tomorrowland of Multimodal Transport: How Technology and Law are Transforming Global Commerce and the Supply Chain

About this event

The year 1980 heralded a failed attempt by the United Nations to codify and unify the international law of global multimodal transport and, with it, in hindsight, an early opportunity to promote common ground and collaboration between historically unimodal carriers and their associated logistical support networks.

In the absence of a universally accepted multimodal transport paradigm, the past 40 years have seen unimodal forms of transport, whether air, road, sea, or rail, competing aggressively with each other for commercial gain while, concurrently, developing and pursuing intermodal transport and logistics relationships to enhance the competitiveness of their respective modes. The result, even in the absence of formal codification, is a distinct shift over time to an unavoidably multimodal paradigm in which virtually all aspects and components of the global supply chain are incorporated.

The rapid establishment and integration of e-commerce into modern lifestyle, together with the increasing availability and employment of new technology, particularly including all the possibilities that digitalisation offers, has contributed significantly to the development of global multimodal logistics and relationships.

The past year of pandemic has brought consideration and future development of the global multimodal supply chain and its related technologies to the forefront of discussion in all areas of commerce. Our webinar will examine the significant issues influencing the now undeniable future of global multimodal transport and logistical relationships, its associated technologies and legal issues.
