Askold Kurov’s documentary follows the show trial of Ukrainian film maker and activist Oleg Sentsov, arrested by the Russian secret services in 2014 for his opposition to the annexation of Crimea. Sentsov rejects the role of a scapegoat and accuses the accusers themselves. The film analyses the workings of the repressive Russian state machine with its contrived charges of terrorism, sophisticated torture methods, and inevitability of the 'guilty' verdict.

The Trial was premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017. The screening will be followed by a discussion looking at the film in the context of dissident practices and prison writing, documentary theatre and cinema in Ukraine, and Crimean history of political persecutions and deportations. The participants include Molly Flynn (Birkbeck), Rory Finnin (Cambridge), Olesya Khromeychuk (Kings), and Josephine von Zitzewitz (Cambridge). The panel is moderated by Sasha Dovzhyk.
