'The tumbling lassie' — human rights in 17th-century Scotland?

Thursday 8 March, 2pm

An International Womens Day event

In 1687, the Court of Session in Edinburgh was faced with a claim from a man who claimed to 'own' a girl gymnast known to history simply as 'the tumbling lassie'. This talk will explore the case in its social, legal and historical context — so familiar in some parts and yet so alien in others. How did the 17th-century judges respond to this frank assertion of slavery? What lesson does their response have for us today?
