The Turkish Gambit by Boris Akunin - Russian Literature Book Club Meet-up i...
Thu 6 April 2017, 18:30 – 20:00 BST
In our April meet-up, we're going to discuss a book from a series of historical detective stories by a proclaimed contemporary Russian author Boris Akunin (the pen name of Grigory Chkhartishvili).
The novel takes place in Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) with a Russian detective Erast Fandorin investigating the doings of a Turkish agent thwarting Russian advance.
The Turkish Gambit was made into a movie in Russia in 2005, so those who understand Russian are welcome to watch it prior to or after the meet-up. There're rumours that BBC may produce a short series about Fandorin too.
We're going to discuss the book, the context of the events at the time in Russia, Europe and Turkey and what we may learn about Russians from this piece of writing. The discussion is going to be informal, in English (you're welcome to read the book in any language). There's been a suggestion each of us reads a favourite passage from the book - so be prepared.:-)
You're welcome to bring tea or coffee (or juice, or kvas) with you, we'll have some biscuits. After the meet-up those who'd like to chat in even more informal setting can go to a cafe or pub nearby.
