The UK in the Global Economy
Introducing the IPPR Center for Economic Justice

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) is delighted to invite you to our event 'The UK in the Global Economy'. This will take place on Thursday 9th May, 15.30-19.00 at The Congress Centre, 28 Great Russell Street, WC1B 3LS, London. The event will open with refreshments at 15.30, with speeches commencing at 16.00. It will then finish with a drinks reception between 18.00-19.00.

The UK economy is not working. It no longer provides rising living standards for the majority, and as more and more people feel economically disenfranchised, the political consequences are being felt across society. Many of the causes of the UK’s poor economic performance go back 30 years or more, pre-dating Brexit and the global financial crisis.

Key trends in the global economy make the task of fundamental reform more urgent. The global slowdown in trade, the growth of debt in major economies and political uncertainty present risks to growth and stability. Environmental breakdown and technological change will have huge impacts on the sustainability and strength of our economic model.

This event will coincide with the launch of the first discussion paper from the Centre for Economic Justice at IPPR, on how our economic model must change to meet the challenges ahead. The Centre has been founded to take forward the landmark report ‘Prosperity & Justice: a Plan for the New Economy’.

Join us as our speakers consider:

  • What does a sustainable growth model for the UK look like in the context of the changing global economy?
  • Are we due another recession? How should policymakers prepare?
  • How can we deliver prosperity and justice in light of these global trends?
