MMB is delighted to welcome Pablo Ceriani and Alvaro Botero to the first of our online Latin America Dialogues. In conversation with Diego Acosta – MMB’s International Strategic Lead – they will discuss the UN’s International Migrant Workers Convention, adopted by the General Assembly 30 years ago. The conversation will delve into the reasons for its low ratification, its value as a living instrument, the importance of academics (sometimes negative), civil society and courts, its procedure, the trade-offs with states and examples of all of the above.

Speakers:

Alvaro Botero is a current member and rapporteur of the UN Committee on Migrant Workers, which monitors implementation of the Convention, and Coordinator of the Organization of American States’ Unit on Refugees and Forced Displacement.

Pablo Ceriani is former Vice-chair of the Committee on Migrant Workers and is currently Director of the Specialization on Migration, Asylum and Human Rights at the National University of Lanús, Argentina.

Diego Acosta is Professor of European and Migration Law at the Bristol Law School. His latest book is The National versus the Foreigner in South America: 200 Years of Migration and Citizenship Law (Cambridge University Press, 2018).

The MMB Latin America Dialogues are online conversations between MMB members in Bristol and colleagues in Latin America who share specialist areas of interest in the field of migration and mobility studies.

Format:

The discussion will last for 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes Q&A from the audience.

The event will be in English and will take place on Zoom. Attendees will receive a Zoom link 24 hours beforehand.
