About this Event

THE UNCOMMON COMMON: THE CURIOUS HISTORY OF GREENHAM COMMON

by Emeritus Professor Andy Kempe

Venue: The Sutton Hall, Stockcross, Nr Newbury, Berkshire RG20 8LN

At 7:00 for 7:30pm on Friday 13 March 2020

Through the 1980s Greenham Common became synonymous with the protest against nuclear weapons most visibly embodied by the Women’s Peace Camp at the USAF base on the common.

While the Greenham Women drew the world’s attention to this otherwise quiet corner of West Berkshire their presence was not the first or only occasion that the common had found itself integral to events of considerable national and indeed international importance.

This talk provides a lively profile of the common’s history from being a sizeable stretch of uncultivated heathland through its time as a major military base and back to what it is now, a site of special scientific interest open to all to enjoy. The talk will exemplify the importance of introducing young people to this history and how this may be done in an engaging way.

Tickets are £10.00 each via Eventbrite and include buffet refreshments.
