Event description
In this film, musician and activist Pravini Baboeram tells the story of resistance against racism in Europe through music.

About this Event

The Race, Class and Ethnicity (RaCE) research network at the University of Sunderland is pleased to host a screening of the acclaimed documentary film 'The Uprising' which is based on the music album, written and produced by Pravini Baboeram. With the nine songs from the album, in this film Pravini connects the struggle against blackface, the struggle for the recognition of colonial crimes committed by the Netherlands in Indonesia, the struggle for the liberation of Palestine and the struggle in the political field for an inclusive society. In this way 'The Uprising' offers a unique view of the resistance movement against racism in Europe through the eyes of people of colour.

This documentary film premiered in April 2019 in Amsterdam. Since then the film has been screened at educational institutions like University of California Los Angeles (Los Angeles) and UC Berkeley (Berkeley), cultural institutions such as Museum of African Diaspora (Smithsonian Affiliate, San Francisco) and Filmhuis Den Haag (The Hague).

Now Pravini is touring the UK to screen the film and engage in a discussion with the audience afterwards.
