Event Details

The news can be pretty dark at times. There’s a lot of it about, and it’s often sobering. There are so many crises now that we may be facing a crisis crisis.

But things may not be as bad as you think. Even some of the darkest threats have silver linings. The Upside is a Guardian series that is all about positive news. Global heating - can we confront it? The decline of democracy - can we reverse it? Health, education, gender equality, racial equality - are we making progress?

Join Mark Rice-Oxley and a panel of optimists to explore reasons to be cheerful in this strange era when we've never been as prosperous - and as miserable. Speakers include Yomi Adegoke, co-author of Slay in Your Lane; Professor Paul Dolan, professor of Behavioural Science at LSE; and Helen Russell, author of The Atlas of Happiness. More speakers to be announced.

Optimism isn’t frivolous, it’s necessary.

Running time: 90 minutes, no interval.
