This workshop aims to outline:
the historical use and manufacture of lime for use in construction
the properties of lime and the concept of the ‘breathing building’
the ‘Lime cycle’
the use of aggregates, hair and pozzolanic additives to create different mixes.
the difference between lime putty, hydraulic and hydrated lime
the English and continental lime classification
correct mixing and application of lime as mortar, render, plaster and limewash.
to give practical experience of pointing and plastering using lime
with a site visit – to understand the workings of a lime quarry, extraction, burning in a variety of kilns and transport.
Participants should wear old, warm clothes and safety boots or stout walking boots.
Goggles, gloves and masks will be provided.
