Event Details

This one-day symposium open to the public aims to commemorate Ramon y Cajal discoveries in the 111th anniversary of his Nobel prize and to bring neuroscience research closer to a general audience. We will go on a trip from basic neuroscience to clinical applications and processes like consciousness, highlighting the impact of Ramon y Cajal in the discipline.

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME*

10:30h  Reception and coffee.

11:00h  Welcome by SRUK President and the Director of the Oxford Constituency.

11:10-12:00h

Homage to Ramon y Cajal, implications for modern neuroscience.  

Speaker: Spanish Professor Javier de Felipe (Ramon y Cajal Institute, Madrid) worldwide expert on Ramon y Cajal’s discoveries and legacy.

12:00- 12:50h

The anatomical functional unit: Neurons and synapses.

Speaker: British Eminence Professor Tim Bliss, professor at Oxford University, who has recently been awarded with the most prestigious Neuroscience recognition, the Brain Prize. He will continue the journey showing us how those different cell types (neurons) communicate and form networks. 

12:50h  Lunch and coffee break.

MRC Stands with activities and suggestion box (questions for the speakers).

14:00-14:50h

The 21st century mind. Blowing it, expanding it, losing it.

Speaker: Baroness Prof Susan Greenfield, professor at Oxford University, 

14:50-15:05h

Magic in your brain

Mr. Matthew Tompkins, researcher.

15:10- 15:50h

Open debate and questions: Neuroscience of consciousness “The essence of what we are”.

The event will finish with an open round table where the speakers will answer questions from the audience.

15:50-16:00h Closing remarks.

The event is free and lunch will be provided, but registration is needed, as the number of seats is limited. If you register but are no longer able to attend this event, please get in contact and we will assign you place to somebody else.
