Dr Hamid Mughal, Director of Manufacturing, Rolls-Royce Plc
The Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture Series is an opportunity to welcome to Heriot-Watt University public speakers of the highest calibre from the worlds of industry, business and academia to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas for the future on a variety of globally relevant subjects.
This first lecture in the series will take place on Tuesday 18th October 2016 at our Edinburgh Campus at 6pm and will feature a question and answer session with Dr Mughal.
The lecture will provide an opportunity to engage with our guest speaker and to meet with our key academics and industry partners. You will find out more about Heriot-Watt’s global role in thought leadership and impactful learning and research across our international campuses.
Following the lecture there will be reception with an opportunity to view the Global Pioneers Exhibition and meet with our key researchers and academics.
The Global Pioneers Exhibition will showcase our world-leading, solution-focused research pioneers, our educational best-practice and to demonstrate our thought leadership in key global areas.
Refreshments will be served from 5.30pm with the lecture starting at 6pm.
Following the lecture there will be a networking buffet reception from 7pm.

About the Speaker - Dr Hamid Mughal, Director of Manufacturing, Rolls-Royce Plc
Hamid is an internationally acclaimed Manufacturing Leader with a wide ranging experience base in the Automotive and Aerospace Sectors. He joined Rolls-Royce in 2001 from BMW Group where he was Director of New Product Programmes.
In his current role as Director of Manufacturing, Rolls-Royce plc, Hamid is responsible for leading the Manufacturing activities & strategies across the company’s manufacturing base. This includes the development and deployment of Manufacturing methods, standards, technologies, systems and Lean practices to achieve Best in Class performance. He is also responsible for the professional development of the global Manufacturing community in the company.
Hamid has an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, BA in Mathematics and Technology, MSc. in Production Engineering & Management and a Doctorate in Manufacturing Systems. He has a keen interest in the latest developments in Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management and contributes regularly to professional bodies in his capacity as Pro Chancellor University of Nottingham and External Professor at Manufacturing at Cranfield and Sheffield Universities. He is a Chartered Engineer, winner of the IET’s International Manufacturing Gold Medal, Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, IMechE and IET and a Board member of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.
Hamid passionately believes in the social and economic value of Manufacturing. He plays a leading role in the advancement of competitive Manufacturing by promoting collaborative programmes such as the Global network of Advanced Manufacturing Research Centres, the development & application of Lean Production Systems, The Future of Manufacturing developments and training programmes for industrial leaders.
Hamid received an OBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours for services to Innovation, Technology and Manufacturing.
