Have a taste of a Victorian Christmas! ‘The Victorian Christmas’ including taste samples

About this event

‘The Victorian Christmas’ including taste samples

Join us at The Old King’s Head to learn all about The Victorian Christmas. You will discover a brief history of Christmas in England, the early traditions and how we lost them.

Christmas was later reborn in 19th Century but how did many of the modern Christmas celebrations and traditions we know of today, come into practice during the reign of Queen Victoria. What did they give as gifts to each other? What were the first Christmas crackers? When did they start to give Christmas cards (we will even showcase some samples of them!)

We will then take a look at Victorian Christmas food and some suggested menus for a Victorian Christmas dinner; plenty to choose from as they had anywhere between 5 – 8 courses or even more!

The talk will then finish as we investigate the American influences that gave us Santa Claus.

There will also be a table top display including some Victorian kitchenalia, handmade Victorian style crackers and cards.

Each person will be able to try a range of homemade Victorian samples including:

Temperance Beverage ( dates to 1872) (non-Alcoholic) Traditionally a summer drink, made with Raspberries and pineapple, nowadays we can make this at any time of the year with frozen raspberries.

Hot Spiced apple juice (1900’s New England Recipe)

Mrs Beeton’s Cheese Straws (1882)

Devilled Almonds (1890)

Victorian gingerbread

Christmas pudding and sweet pudding sauce – Charles Elme Francatelli (in 1840 he was Maitre d’hotel and Chief cook to Queen Victoria)this is a recipe from his book: A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes (1852) served warm.
