Tim is a past President of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), and previous Director of the Comet, Asteroid and Meteor Section of ASSA, a position heI held for 20 years. Also an Honorary Member of ASSA, which he joined in 1974 on the same evening as the late Patrick Moore when he made one of his frequent visits to South Africa.
His main interests are comets, asteroids and meteors, but also variable stars, and the scientific study of lunar eclipses. He is the coordinator of the South African station of CAMS (Cameras for Allsky Meteor Surveillance) which runs under the auspices of NASA Ames and the SETI Institute.
He also started the Southern African Fireball Catalogue, which contains the results of investigation of over 450 fireballs since it started in 1993. The IAU named asteroid 22722 after Tim for research I have done in the field of meteor astronomy.
