The Vikings in Northumbria
Overview
This series of three talks by Dr. June Neilson will explore the history, settement, everyday life, culture and legacy of the Viking age in Northumbria. It will take place on Mondays 10 am-12 pm.
The first lecture will be devoted to the geographical area and origins of the Vikings, including their name. Attention will then be given to the Viking impact on Northumbria through its raiding, invasion, conquest and settlement.
Lecture 2 will look at the details of settlement to encompass its towns, housing and everyday life to include crafts, metalwork, jewellery and stone sculpture.
The final lecture will discuss the legacy of this era taking in place-name evidence, the effects of Old Norse on the English language, the numbers of Viking settlers, DNA analysis and religion. Finally, in summing up, could the Viking era be considered positively or negatively?
No previous knowledge of the topic is assumed, and all are welcome. Tea and coffee will be served. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.
