2018 marks the 3rd year of Redefine Conference. April 2016 at Columbia University, Redefine Conference started a tradition, calling hundreds of young Chinese women to listen, contemplate and change current issues faced by our cohort little by little. “Chinese Women Empowerment” was the theme for our 1st Redefine Conference and we shifted our focus to the “Chinese Women Abroad” in 2017. This year, we aim to talk about “The Voice of Contemporary Chinese Women,” who we “Represent,” hope to “Reshape” and “Redefine”.

The 2018 Redefine Conference is a 2-day event with four main sessions - Panel Discussions, Workshops, Research Seminar and Career Training & Networking. Additionally, Redefine proudly presents a SELECTIVE networking lunch opportunity with featured industry professionals, who are eager to share their experience, answer your questions and learn more about you.

For those who are interested in one-on-one talks with mentors during the Career Training & Networking Session (11:15 - 12:15pm on Sunday, 4/15) or the SELECTIVE networking lunch on Sunday 4/15, the application process is as follows:

1) Purchase a regular conference ticket through Eventbrite;

2) Send a copy of your resume and a cover letter (~200 words, can be your qualifications, motivation, goal, etc.) to for a general screening.

Those who are seleceted will receive an email invitation to confirm your attendance. You can then purchase the lunch-inclusive ticket by choosing "RSVP - with Networking Lunch."

Panel Discussion topics include:

  • Slashies: Chinese Female Professionals in Multiple Industries

  • Experience and Observations: Chinese Women and Higher Education

Panel I: Slashies - Chinese Female Professionals in Multiple Industries

This panel will look into genders, cultural identities, and career choices. Specifically, speakers will share how they position themselves for career advancement, as well as the challenges and opportunities they encountered as slashies. The discussion will emphasize on how being Chinese women influence their career transformations.

Panel II: Experience and Observations: Chinese Women and Higher Education

This panel will focus on gender and higher education with a historical perspective that China has been rising to be a significant global power. Four cross-generational panelists will offer their unique insights regarding pursuing higher education in the US. Talks include drives of studying abroad, struggles of returing to China or staying in the US, along with gender-related topics like sexual harassment and gender discrimination in higher education.

Selected topics to be explored in depth at the Workshops are:

  • Negotiation

  • Social Entrepreneurship

  • Education

  • Sense of Purpose

Selected questions to be discussed at the Research Seminar are:

  • What role did/does ethnicity play in your friendships and romantic relationships?

  • How do your gender, original family and tradtional cultures influence your attitude towards marriage / family?

  • How were/are you influenced by exogenous immigration laws when thinking about career paths after graduation?

  • What factors do you consider when making long-term decisions such as immigration?

  • Were/Are people mentally stressed because of, or regardless of their experience abroad?

Industries represented at the Career Training & Networking Session* are:

  • Investment Banking

  • Finance

  • NGO

  • Consulting

  • Technology / Data

  • Nonconventional (HR, Art, Healthcare)

*Note: A one-on-one session with represented industry professionals is available for applying, which will take place at 11:15 - 12:15pm on Sunday 4/15, simultaneously with an open-to-the-public soft skill training session. There are only 3 spots for each mentor, and applicants will be invited on a rolling basis. Please start your application process early! History of Redefine:

Founded in 2015, Redefine builds a community for Chinese women, with a focus on self-discovery, growth and leadership. Through cultivating critical thinking mindset and giveback mentality, we aim to empower young females to redefine their identities and influence their communities.

Vision of Redefine Conference:

By fostering dialogues and workshops, we seek to empower Chinese women with connections, resources and mindsets to develop self awareness, continue critical thinking and grow into future leaders. The long-term purpose is to change the world into a more gender-equal place through ripple effects.
