Review:

Renos, the eponymous server of Steve Krikris’ assured debut feature, is a laconic presence, deeply wedded to his routines and devoted to botany. Every day he waits tables at a café in Athens, delivering a courteously professional service, the success of which is predicated upon its unobtrusiveness. The grisly murder of a next door neighbour brings a psychopathic killer into Renos’s otherwise anodyne existence, at which point Kriskris’s film heads for the murky depths of classic film noir.

Working with promising Director of Photography Giorgos Karvelas (NOCTURNE), Kriskris has created deceptively intricate widescreen frames that accentuate the tension between comedy and horror at the heart of the film. The balance and organisation of Renos’s quiet little life is set permanently askew by the cat and mouse toying of the killer, played with unsettlingly creepy charm by Yannis Stankoglou. As to why his neighbour has been killed, and what the alluring beauty of Tzina (Chiara Gensini) has to do with the whole affair, forms part of the tantalising mystery that even Renos cannot resist investigating. / Review by Rohan Berry Crickmar
