Take this opportunity to sample Welsh life, meet with Welsh people, find out more about the history of the YMCA in Wales and experience cultural, historical and heritage sites across South Wales.

South Wales is famous for its amazing beaches (Rhossili Beach near Swansea has ranked as one of the best beaches in the world and Pendine, at over 9 miles long, has been used to break the land speed record on numerous occasions), wonderful scenery, rich history, industrial heritage and famous for Barry Island, featured in the popular UK tv series, Gavin and Stacey. Dylan Thomas, the world-famous poet was born in Swansea, and wrote his most famous work ‘Under Milk Wood’ from his house and ‘writing shed’ in Laugharne. YMCA Swansea is the last surviving theatre in Swansea where Dylan Thomas performed on stage!

Highlights of this Discovery Visit will include:

● Visits to a number of YMCAs throughout South Wales including YMCA Swansea and YMCA Cardiff

● A visit to the National Museum of Wales, National Folk Museum and historic castles

● Formal reception with local Councillors, Assembly Members and Members of Parliament

● Visit Cardiff Bay, The Senedd - Wales’ Parliament, and land mark Pier Head Building

● Visit and learn about the work of YMCAs throughout South Wales

● An evening visit to the South Wales Coast

● Meeting young people, members, staff and board members from YMCAs in Wales, finding out about the work in the local communities and how YMCAs in Wales have shaped and contributed to our communities for over 160 years.

The activities planned will share and celebrate what is rewarding about YMCAs work in Wales, the role it plays within local communities, and the collaborative approach of multiple local YMCAs on how they work together to seek local solutions to complex national problems.

There will be opportunity to learn about local culture, the Welsh language and rich heritage of the YMCA in Wales, where YMCA Cardiff was one of the first YMCAs to be opened in the UK in 1852, and YMCA Swansea celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

This visit is being coordinated by YMCA Swansea, working with YMCA Cardiff, YMCA Barry, YMCA Porthcawl, YMCA Abervalley, YMCA Port Talbot, YMCA Bridgend, YMCA Bargoed, YMCA Neath, and YMCA Pontypridd.

Trip Information
Start: The Discovery Visit will begin with arrival on Thursday 8 August Please ensure you are ready to begin the Discovery Visit at 18.00 on 8 August.

You will be collected from Port Talbot Train Station and transported to our accommodation at nearby Margam Discovery Centre, where you will be based throughout your stay.

YMCA Cymru (Wales) look forward to meeting you on your arrival.

Finish: With breakfast at accommodation in Port Talbot on Sunday 11 August. Delegates will need to arrange onward travel.

Helpful travel advice
Take the train from London Paddington to Swansea Train station (3hrs 8 Mins)

You could also take a coach from London Victoria to Swansea University (4hrs 23mins)

The closest airports for your return journey will be Bristol or Cardiff Airport you could also return to via London, London City, Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick

During your visit your host YMCA will coordinate travel, accommodation, food and ticket entry to any excursions.
