The Watermill Wednesday Walk with Wightways

Step into a gentler pace of life with a guided 4-mile walk along the Caul Bourne — the stream that has powered Calbourne Water Mill for over a thousand years.

This circular route meanders through peaceful countryside, quiet lanes, and wooded paths, offering a chance to stretch your legs, clear your head, and soak up the beauty of the Isle of Wight’s rural heart. Along the way, your walk leader will share snippets of local history and natural highlights.

The walk ends back at the Mill café with a freshly baked scone, clotted cream and jam, and a pot of tea — all included in your ticket.

During the summer, Southern Vectis’ "Island Coaster" service stops directly outside Calbourne Water Mill:

  • On 23rd July and from 3rd to 24th September, it departs Newport Bus Station at 1:00pm, arriving at the Mill at approximately 1:14pm.
  • Between 30th July and 20th August, the bus departs Newport at 12:00pm, arriving at 12:14pm. You are welcome to visit the cafe and stroll around the Mill grounds until the walk starts.
  • Return buses to Newport depart from the Mill at 5:35pm.

Alternatively, if you are using the Route 7 bus, you can alight at Calbourne Cross. Please do not walk along the main Freshwater Road for safety reasons. Instead:

  • Walk a short distance along the B3401 towards Newbridge
  • Turn right onto footpath CB13
  • Follow the footpath to approach the Mill from the north

Please wear comfortable walking shoes or trail trainers. Dress for the weather — layers, sun protection or waterproofs depending on the forecast. A refillable water bottle is recommended.

Is the walk suitable for children?

The walk is not suitable for children under 16, due to terrain, distance and pace.

Walks will go ahead in light rain, but in the event of extreme weather or any unforeseen circumstances, the organiser may cancel. In this case, you’ll receive a full refund.

Can I cancel or get a refund?
