Event description
What if communities had the power to create the housing they need? Join UK pioneers as they discuss getting beyond the housing crisis.

About this Event

We Can Make and Bristol Community Land Trust present a special Festival of the Future City episode of the We Can Make Chat Show.

Knowle West was the future of housing 100 years ago when it was founded as the ‘5000 island forest’: 5000 homes on a hill on the edge of Bristol, all designed according to Garden City principles.

It is proving to be the future of housing again as the community experiments with new, citizen-led approaches to creating affordable housing using local know-how and resources as part of the We Can Make initiative.

Knowle West is not alone. More and more communities across the UK are doing it for themselves and making sure they - and not developers - call the shots.

Join local hosts Makala and John and special guests from London, Liverpool and Bristol for a special live Chat Show as part the Festival of the Future City.

From place hacking, to redefining “affordable” housing, to unpacking what it means to be a good neighbour, every topic is up for grabs.

The Chat Show will include new artwork created by poet Lawrence Hoo and lots of time for audience questions and responses. Drinks will served after the show and there will be a chance to continue the conversation next door at the We Can Make prototype home.

Speakers and special guests include:

  • John Bennett & Makala Cheung, Chat Show hosts
  • Hazel Tilley, Granby 4 Streets, Liverpool
  • Chris Carthy, RUSS Community Land Trust, London
  • Lindy Morgan, Bristol Community Land Trust
  • Lawrence Hoo, Poet
  • Lily Green, Lead Artist No Bindings & Director We Can Make Chat Show

We Can Make

We Can Make is a housing initiative based in Knowle West, Bristol, that aims to support people to create the homes they want and need. Since November 2016 Knowle West Media Centre and architects practice White Design have been working with local residents, architects and policy-makers to try out new ideas for affordable housing. These ideas include building homes on ‘micro-plots’ of spare land. The environmentally friendly We Can Make test home was built next to Filwood Community Centre in the summer of 2017; hundreds of people have stayed overnight to test it out!

We Can Make is supported by the Nationwide Foundation and Power to Change.

The We Can Make Chat Show is recorded every other month in the test home, produced by No Bindings. The show is hosted by local residents and features local guests. It covers a range of topics relating to housing – from affordability to what it means to be a good neighbour. The first four episodes of the Chat Show will be released in September / October 2019, in advance of the Festival of the Future City.
