Description

Carl Jung, Psychedelics & Mental Health: A Semester's Worth of Fascinating Psychology Lectures - All in One Day.

Fascinated by psychology and the human mind?

But don't want to commit to a three-year degree and get into a tonne of student debt to explore your interest further?

This day on psychology at The Weekend University might be for you.

On Sunday 10th December, The Weekend University brings together three of the UK's most interesting and controversial psychology lectures - giving you the best of a university psychology semester, all in one day.

Two leading academics and a mental health practitioner will discuss the latest psychological research into:

  • The current state of mental health in the UK
  • Carl Jung & The Psychology of Religion
  • Psychedelics, Mental Health & Mystical Experiences

It will be similar to a TED event (minus the political correctness), and focused on psychology.

Lectures

The Madness of Happiness – Mental Health, The State, and You!

This year has seen an increased focus on the mental health of the nation by politicians, schools, businesses and even the Royal Family.

But is our quest for happiness driving us mad?

In this provocative talk, Phil Pearl examines the facts, figures, science and practice of mental health, drawing on perspectives from existential philosophy, existential psychotherapy, evolutionary psychology and his personal history. (Phil’s first visit to a therapist was aged 9.)

Phil Pearl is an Existential Coach, Cognitive Behavioural Coach, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer. In 2006 he started his private practice "Mental Toughness" in Harley Street, where he provides coaching and training to individuals and businesses. Phil lectures at the Existential Academy and provides training at City CBT Coaching College.

Carl Jung & The Psychology of Religion

This lecture from Dr Kevin Lu, PhD, will explore Jung's unique approach to the psychology of religion, which will include a critical assessment of his controversial Answer to Job and his reservations regarding westerners turning to eastern religions and practices.

While it is clear that Jung struggled with his own belief and the role of religious institutions in maintaining psychological well-being, there may be indication that the ambivalence with which he regarded organised religion shifted as he approached the end of his life. The lecture will be interactive and the speaker looks forward to a lively discussion and debate.

Dr Kevin Lu, PhD, is Director of Graduate Studies and Director of the MA Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Jungian Studies.

Psychedelics, Mental Health and Mystical Experiences

A new renaissance is currently underway in scientific research into psychedelic substances.

In this talk, Dr David Luke - senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Greenwich, will explore the latest research into psychedelic substances:

- For their potential use in treating mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression and addiction

- As catalysts for genuine mystical experiences and spiritual orientation

- For how both mental health and mystical experience interact with psychedelics

Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience. His research focuses on transpersonal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including five books, most recently Neurotransmissions: Essays on Psychedelics (2015) and Talking with the Spirits: Ethnographies from Between the Worlds (2014).
