About this event

  • 3 hours

Join us for an afternoon wander around three wildlife and community projects right on Moffat’s doorstep. We will start off with a gentle climb up Gallow Hill, once part of the Earl of Annandale Estate and a 19th-century pleasure ground.

More recent history has seen Gallow Hill blanketed in forestry and it's now taking shape as a community woodland

We’ll take a circuit offering fine 360-degree views of the surrounding Moffat Hills and a look at the developing broadleaf planting, watching out overhead for buzzard, kestrel or a skein of pink-footed geese. We then head back through town, nip over the river Annan and on to the Dyke Farm Nature Reserve. Here, we’ll explore its mix of broadleaf woodland, wetlands and network of wiggling paths.

It was once a site of industry but now an expanse of open water and meadows fringed with hawthorn. The lochan may feature cormorant and a range of ducks and geese. We’re joined at the nature reserves by local naturalist Iain Anderson, who is chair of the Moffat and District Wildlife Club. This pleasant amble ends with a walk across the fields back to Moffat.
