THE WINDRUSH GENERATION;GUYANESE BRANCH

They came from ‘BG’in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s to help the ‘motherland’ recover from the ravages of the Second World War. A very few travelled on The Windrush, most on other ships and planes to a cold climate.an unknown New World. What were their expectations? How did they find the UK in reality?Guyanese Rod Westmaas talks to three of the Windrush Generation(names to follow) and ,based on his research with Dr Jack Webb of the University of Liverpool, takes them down memory lane

The Guyanese 'Windrushere' are Juneanne Storey (JS), Joyce Trotman (JT) and George Mangal (GM)..Here's a taster of their views;

1.What year did you leave BG?(JS) 1964. (JT) 1955 (GM) 1959

2. What were you first impressions of England?

(JS) How could all those house be so huge? [observing the semi-detached terrace houses in Harrow]

(JT) A white man, a porter in the train station, I can’t believe it!

(GM) The place was dirty, dark and dingy

3. When growing up in BG what was you favourite sweet?

(JS) Nuttin [nut brittle] (JT) Parker Never Done sweetie (GM) Nuttin and Charms assorted sour balls

4. What sounds did you miss most?

(JS) Rain falling on the zinc roof (JT) Kisskadees singing (GM) The rain man, the rain!....and the seawall gatherings with my friends.

5. What was a typical Sunday meal?

(JS) Soup with lots of provisions and fu fu (JT) Callaloo soup with cutty cutty, shin bone and cow heel.(GM Beef soup with plenty of plantains, cassava and pigeon peas.
