Shaun Walton

Shaun commenced his Fire Service career in 1990 initially serving with Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service until 2009 on promotion to Station Manager transferred to Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service.  His current role is Community Protection Manager for Pennine Area where he has responsibility for operational response, prevention, protection, personnel and training.  Throughout his career Shaun has worked at stations with wildfire risk and has represented the Fire Service on various Wildfire Groups including NFCC WIldfire Group, Peak District Fire Operations Group, Lancashire Fire Operations Group and South Pennine Fire Operations Group.

Shaun supported delveloping the NFCC Wildfire Tactical Advisor capability and has also provided this function at the London 2012 Olympic Games and most recently the Saddleworth Fire in Greater Manchester and the Winter Hill Fire in Lancashire.

Shaun is proactive in developing international and UK learning and development opportunities in wildfire related matters.  He has previously been a contributor to International and UK National Operational Guidance and has worked with the National Fire Protection Association and UK Wildfire Seminars to produce Wildfire publications.  He is currently working with the Pau Costa Foundation towards providing a wildfire suppression burn team capability within Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service whilst developing the Wildfire Tactical Advisors capability within NFCC.

Shaun is 48 years old and lives in Bolton, he is married with two children and enjoys martial arts and power boating.

Talk Synopsis

In June/July 2018 Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service were mobilised to a significant Wildfire on Winter Hill on the boarder of Chorley and Bolton.  The wildfire was unprecedented in terms of scale and intensity in Lancashire and required a Fire & Rescue Service attendance for 41 days. This presentation will inform delegates of the many challenges that the incident presented and include established and innovative methods delivered by Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service to manage the incident.  The role of Partner Agencies, Local Authoritiues, Local Businesses and the Community support afforded to resolve the incident and the recovery phase will also be explained.


This lecture is the 3rd FREE CPD Event of 2019.  The events are run by the IFE in conjunction with The University of Central Lancashire and Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service.  They are held during each academic year and aimed at those working within the Fire Sector and those currently studying in Fire / Rescue related areas.  They provide recognised CPD hours and are free for anyone to attend for their personal development.
