An IMPORTANT  message from The Royal Foundation of St Katharine:

Sadly Esther De Waal has had to withdraw from leading the Quiet Day on December 2nd for health reasons. I am sure we all pray that she will soon return to the best of health. This had led to change of convener for the day and hence a change of topic. I know Robert Van de Weyer and he is a great authority on the Celtic Church but not on Merton. I hope many of you will still want to come and spend a Quiet Day in the Oasis of St Katharine's and explore some fascinating material on a part of the Celtic tradition which is gaining a lot of interest at present.

Please see the  new  details of the day  below.

yours sincerely,

Mark Aitken

The wisdom of Eriugena, Celtic philosopher and mystic.
~ a quiet day with Robert Van de Weyer
2nd December 2017

Robert will explore the teachings of Eriugena, the great Celtic philosopher and mystic.
Eriugena was born in Ireland in the early c9, and spent many years in various Irish monasteries. Unusually he learned Greek, and became familiar with the philosophical and mystical writings of the Eastern church. His voluminous writings are in a style difficult for the modern Western mind to penetrate. Robert has spent many years studying and reflecting on them. Eriugena shows how through understanding the mysteries of human nature - including consciousness, and life itself - we can penetrate the divine mysteries. And he goes on to show how this can bring healing and joy to the soul, mind and body.

Robert has written extensively on the Celtic Christian tradition. He is also a expert on the Ethiopian monastic tradition. For many years he was leader of the Little Gidding Community. He is an unpaid Anglican priest; he has earned a living as an economist and, more recently, as a legal consultant, helping people cheated out of their pensions. He is married, with children and grandchildren.

The cost of £40 includes coffee and pastries on arrival, a sandwich lunch and afternoon pot of tea and cake.
