Join us here at the South London Book Club for October's meet, where we will be going for The Woman in the Dunes by Kōbō Abe. This meeting will take place at the usual time and place of 7pm on the evening of Tuesday, October 7th at the Roundhouse, Wandsworth.
So what is The Woman in the Dunes about?
An amateur entomologist named Jumpei travels to a remote seaside village in search of rare insects. After missing the last bus home, he accepts the villagers’ offer to stay overnight in a house at the bottom of a sand pit. The next morning, he discovers the ladder has been removed, and escape is impossible. He is expected to help a woman who lives there shovel sand to protect the house from being buried. As days pass, Jumpei grapples with his confinement, the woman’s quiet resilience, and the strange rhythms of life in the pit.
We will likely be a group of 6-8 on the night. If you are new to the Group, just come along and don't be apprehensive. We were all first timers once. You don't need to bring the book but make sure you have read it and bring your opinions!
If you are attending for the first time, we will likely all be in far corner of the pub. Imagine that you are standing in front of the long bit of the bar, go left, up the steps and we will try to be sitting in the top left-land corner of the pub. If you cannot make it, please adjust your RSVP, it helps us to organise seating. We will have a piece of A4 on our table displaying The Woman in the Dunes. Do bring an idea of what book we put in the schedule next.
