Gather, discuss and take action with the Women's Equality Party Greater Manchester Branch to reimagine the criminal justice system for women
About this event
Join us for a day of action on Saturday 21st May - as we reimagine true justice that works for women!
We will hear from activists and changemakers who are leading the charge and showing there are alternatives to prison. This day is not just about listening, you will also get to network, learn how to support national campaigns or start your own local campaign.
Join us, get inspired and get involved!
Come along for the whole day (9:30 - 5:00) virtually on Zoom or select sessions you want to take part in. During breaks we will be hosting virtual ‘coffee’ rooms so you can meet other attendees and share your thoughts on the previous session.
This event is curated and co-hosted by:
Tabitha Morton (WE Deputy Leader) and members of WE Greater Manchester Branch (who were key drivers in the WE alternative CJS policy)

Our focus for the day will be on pregnant women and mothers in prison. We know prison is not a safe place for women and even less so for pregnant women!
1 in 10 women give birth inside their cell or on the way to hospital and in the last two years two babies born in prison have died. Even when babies are born safely, prison causes stress and trauma to both mum and baby. All the evidence shows that short sentences tear families apart leaving a lifelong negative impact on women and their children.
At this event, WE will:
- We reimagine the criminal justice system
- Understand the impact on mothers and their children
- Hear how mothers are treated in immigration detention centres
- Learn from those who are modelling an alternative system in the UK
- Discover the tools to make change nationally and in our communities
- Commit to making change together
Women are criminalised because of failures in social policy, funding, and lack of services in the community and experience significant inequalities at all stages in the criminal justice system (CJS). They are given disproportionally harsher sentences than men. The impact of racism is evidenced by the higher percentage of Black and minoritised women in the CJS (20% of prison population).
