The Woodcrafter Bushcraft Course
Ruthin, United Kingdom
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
The one phrase that is key to bushcraft is "knowledge weighs nothing". You can carry less by learning more and gaining experience. The Woodlander Course is a two-day bushcraft skills course that takes place on a private 90-acre site with open farmland, woodland and rivers. The course includes an overnight stay in a woodland shelter, cooking over an open fire and a wide range of other skills.
The first day begins with firelighting using a variety of methods, then builds on this with a tutorial on different ways of cooking over an open fire. After lunch the course syllabus moves on to shelter building where students will work in groups to build shelters from natural materials. They have to be solid - they are going to be slept in! The second day focuses on more advanced skills such as making cordage from natural materials, camp furniture and basic first aid, as well as practicing and honing the skills learnt on the previous day. There is a lot to cover but we will revisit the basic techniques again and again throughout the two days.
There will also be workshops on foraging, purifying drinking water, using a knife, axe safely and sharpening them, tracking and making simple camp tools. Meals are provided, and there are simple and clean wilderness-camp style toilets on site.
This course requires no previous experience or for you to supply any specialist equipment, other than a sleeping bag and mat. The only other equipment you need to bring is good, solid footwear such as walking boots and suitable outdoor clothing, a sleeping bag and sleeping mat/bedroll. We will supply all required equipment as well as food and drink for the duration of the course.
