The Workforce Walking Challenge
Leading the way to better health
Meeting point: Monton Unitarian Church, Monton Green, Monton M30 8AP
Easily accessible by public transport and free parking available
Please wear suitable footwear and clothing. Bring a drink.
Come and take part in a celebration of The Salford Trail by walking a section of it with your workmates and colleagues. The challenge is to walk more than 500 miles collectively. Family members, friends and dogs are also welcome!
There will be different circular walks, each led by an experienced guide, to take part in ranging from 2 and 6 miles long. The walks will be followed by refreshments on the green in Monton at the front of the church, so bring a packed lunch or picnic.
Why are we doing the challenge?
Evidence shows that walking improves physical activity, supports mental wellbeing, helps the local environment and enhances communities. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers.
Around 20% of Salford is greenspace of one form or another, not including the vast areas of agricultural land and most of the green belt. The new Salford Trail is a 50 mile/80 kilometre walk and entirely within the boundaries of the City of Salford.
The NHS and City Council are the largest employers in Salford and the majority of the workforce are Salford citizens. Therefore, the project has the potential to support their wellbeing and inspire them to make behaviour change.
