About Ink Garden by Raymond Yiu
Ink Garden takes its title from an eponymous collection of Chinese calligraphy and graphics and is a tribute to the late Richard Rodney Bennett (1936-2012), drawing inspiration from one of Bennett’s unpublished jazz songs Goodbye for Now (1995).
Written for Regent Brass and made possible thanks to funding from the BBC Performing Arts Fund and PRS for Music Foundation, the world premiere of Ink Garden will be performed by Regent Brass, London and Southern Counties Brass Band Champions 2013, alongside sister ensemble Regent Community Brass, who will celebrate their first anniversary at this event.
The project was designed to attract new compositional talent and audiences to build on the rich history of brass banding in the UK. Composer Raymond Yiu said of his debut work for brass band, “Ink Garden was one of the most challenging and exciting projects that I have ever undertaken”. The award-winning composer relished the opportunity to work with instruments unfamiliar to many orchestral writers and hopes that the piece will raise other composers’ interest in writing for brass band.
