About this event

  • 2 hours

After embracing our love for all the fantastic whiskies from Scotland and Ireland, we've cast our net further adrift for April's Tasting by selecting 5 whiskies from 5 different nations and all released by one bottler.

Beginning the flight in Peder's ancestral home of Denmark, we've a 6 YO Bourbon Cask release from Fary Lochan with a twist: it is the only distillery in the world that smokes the malted barley over fresh nettles which imbibes a special, unique flavour profile to the whisky.

From Denmark we will then head to Italy's PUNI Distillery. Nestled in the Alps in an area known as 'the Highlands of Italy', it's been pioneering the Italian Malt Whisky scene since 2010. For Dram 2, we will be enjoying a 4 YO Blend that was distilled from a selection of malted barley, malted rye, and malted wheat, then treated to a finish in a Pinot Noir barrique before being bottled at a light 47.1% ABV.

Dram 3 sees us return to the British Isles with a belter of a bottle from Penderyn, Wales' popular and oft-commended distillery. Rarely seen as an Indie Bottling, we're excited to try it. One of only 428 bottles, it was distilled in 2012, filled into a Fino Sherry Barrique to mature, and finally bottled at 52.9%.

Next we move to the Netherlands to try a Millstone 4 YO PX Cask. The distillery still uses windmills for the purpose of milling their barley and this is great for a few reasons: it's provided them a name, it's a nod to the traditions of the country, and, finally, it allows them to retain much of the aroma and flavours by not increasing the temperature of the grain during this process. This was bottled at 53.8% and is a release of only 121 bottles.

Finally, we finish the flight with an American Single Malt whisky from Copperworks Distillery. With only 58 bottles of this whisky released, it's a great occasion to try something different. Based in Seattle and opened in 2013, it's regularly won awards for the whiskies released and in 2018 was named 'Distillery of the Year' by the American Distilling Institute. This is a 3 YO that's spent the entirety of it's young life in a newly charred American Oak Barrel and bottled at 50.5%.

Frequently asked questions

I can't attend - can I get a refund?

Just give us a shout at least 24 hours before the event via email at thewhiskeynomads@gmail.com or on social media, and we will be happy to refund your ticket(s).

Can I sit with my pals?

Of course you can! Just email us at thewhiskeynomads@gmail.com, let us know who you are attending with, and we will ensure you are seated at your own table together.

Why are the measures only 25mls?

We strive to source Cask Strength releases, so many of the whiskies selected will be 50% ABV & more. We strongly advise all attendees to add water to their drams. This will lessen the ABV & open the whisky up with new aromas & flavours. Please Note: We will never taste whiskies below 46%.

Are you affiliated with any brands or distilleries?

No. We are two close friends with a passion for whisk(e)y who enjoy expanding our knowledge & meeting other enthusiasts. Neither of us comes from an industry background. All we do is source fantastic whisky & share it with others.

What if I don't like the whisk(e)y?

We will always be open about the whiskies selected for every flight - you are free to google them, read reviews, & decide prior to ticket purchase. Please be aware that there will always be a risk that you may not enjoy one/some/all of the drams & there are no refunds if this occurs.

Is the whisk(e)y suitable for vegans?

Whisk(e)y is made using water, grain, yeast. At base level it is vegan. However, some casks will be used in which isinglass (gelatine derived from fish bladder) filtered the previous contents (wine/sherry), so the answer to this question lies in how strict your interpretation of veganism is.

Is the event wheelchair accessible?

We are very sorry, but unfortunately neither location that we use has wheelchair access to the upstairs room where the tastings are held.

How often are the tastings?

We hold one tasting a month. There is no intention to increase the number of tastings, mainly because our wives would not be very happy.

What if I am late?

Doors open at 19:45 and we aim to kick off the tasting by 20:00

Do we have to leave the tasting when it finishes?

There is no rush for attendees to vacate. We want you take your time and, if you still have whisky left, stay on and enjoy it at your own pace. Please note though, that The Bar will open upstairs to other customers for seating once we are finished.

I have allergies and/or dietary requirements - is this OK?

Of course. Please let us know in advance via email at thewhiskeynomads@gmail.com or on social media, and we will provide alternatives to the regular oatcakes and dark chocolate.

Organised by

We are The Whiskey Nomads (aka Peder and Nick).

Based in Belfast, we host Whisk(e)y Tastings once a month upstairs in The American Bar. All of our tastings are themed with some of the best whisk(e)y that Scotland and Ireland offers, and the bottles we select are Non-Chill Filtered and Natural Colour. We also source Cask Strength releases when possible with a focus on Independent Bottlers.

We ensure attendees/groups have their own table for the tasting and palate cleansers are provided (gluten-free alternatives are available) alongside fresh spring water and tasting cards to write your tasting notes.

You can take the tasting as seriously or as relaxed as you like, so whether you’re an enthusiast or just curious, a local or a visitor, why not come along to try some wonderful drams?
