Description

Join London Drawing Group as we spend a day at the fantastically unique Horniman Museum, South London, with the world’s most most famous Walrus and his taxidermic companions! As much a part of London culture (for South Londoners at least) as Big Ben or Trafalgar Square, the Walrus has been on display at the Horniman for more than a century. Our favourite example of taxidermy-gone-wrong, this loveable, if over-inflated beast is a remnant of a time of adventure, curiosity and often terrible taxidermy! Over stuffed, and lacking the characteristic Walrus-Wrinkles, (at the time when it was caught, only a few people had ever seen a live walrus, so when sent the walrus remains to preserve for posterity, the taxidermists innocently assumed that they should stuff it until it was… well, full) the Horniman Walrus has grown over the years from his accidental beginnings to an unlikely museum mascot- presiding regally over a hall of unusual critters and creations, and even photo-bombing a few wedding snaps!

Join LDG for this amazing class as we spend a day exploring the Horniman Collection, drawing the animals, historical remains and specimens from this truly weird and wonderful collection.

This class is set to be a totally unique experience, with exercises tailored to the exceptional content of the Museum, we will be exploring how the collections of London's museums and galleries can inspire our drawings, bringing about unexpected combinations of forms and styles.

Please bring a sketchbook and drawing materials, and meet outside the museum front entrance at 11am sharp!
