Event description

Description

Dennis Padfield will give an illustrated talk about the extraordinary women, dubbed “Idle Women”, who crewed the narrow boats on Britain’s Inland Waterways during the Second World War.

The Second World War opened up real opportunities for women. With this tremendous national crisis came the recruitment of men into the armed forces. This left many canal carrying companies short of essential barge and narrowboat crews. Movement of materials was required more than ever all over the English inland waterways. Into this void came a number of adventurous young women and girls. But life was not easy for them, not only was the pay very low the working conditions were hard, dirty, cold and sometimes downright uncomfortable. This talk is about these heroic women and the life they endured in order to “do their bit” for the war effort.
