Description

The Wymering May Day Fair

In 1865 Rev Nugee began the first of the Wymering May Festivals at the Manor. We are revisiting the tradition by opening the house and grounds on May Day. With a range of games, stalls and activities outside for all the family; there will also a treasure hunt tours inside the house.

Entry to the Fair is free but we ask a small donation to play the games and to take the tours. As space is limited inside and out we are allocating time slots throughout the day. Games include; Hook a Duck, Tin Can Alley, Hoops, Water Stock - an opportunity for you to put your relatives in the stocks and through sponges at them. With all this hard work you will then of course need refreshments - so there will be stalls selling cold refreshments. Please only book if you are sure you can attend, else you will be blocking the space for others who would like to attend.

This is a rare opportunity to explore Wymering Manor - the Grade II* listed building said to be the oldest residential property in the city of Portsmouth. A settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book, it is first recorded in 1042 and throughout the ages it has changed hands numerous times.

Come and explore this history and see for yourself the work being done to restore the House. We advise pre-booking as space inside the building is limited - free tickets. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Only those booked on a time slot can tour the inside of the house.
