The YTL Centre Annual Lecture in Politics, Philosophy and Law this year will be given by Jeremy Waldron (NYU), with replies from Stephen Darwall (Yale), Frances Kamm (Rutgers), Richard Holton and Rae Langton (Cambridge).

The YTL Centre Annual Lecture in Politics, Philosophy and Law was established in 2017. Its aim is to provide a forum for a leading contemporary thinker to address an important issue of our day that engages with the disciplines of politics, philosophy and law. The inaugural lecturer in 2017 was Professor Martha Nussbaum (University of Chicago). Since then, the Centre has hosted Professor T.M. Scanlon (Harvard University) in 2018, Professor Richard Tuck (Harvard University) in 2019, and Professor Miranda Fricker (City University of New York) in 2020.

Biography:

Jeremy Waldron teaches legal and political philosophy at NYU School of Law. Until recently, he was also Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford University (All Souls College). A prolific scholar, Waldron has written extensively on jurisprudence and political theory, including numerous books and articles on theories of rights, constitutionalism, the rule of law, democracy, property, torture, security, homelessness, and the philosophy of international law. His books include Dignity, Rank, and Rights (2012), Partly Laws Common to All Mankind: Foreign Law in American Courts (2012), The Harm of Hate Speech (2012), Torture, Terror, and Trade-offs: Philosophy for the White House (2010), Law and Disagreement (1999), and The Dignity of Legislation (1999).

The Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy and Law was founded in 2014 as a focal point for interdisciplinary research in law from the perspective of both philosophy and politics. Although based in The Dickson Poon School of Law, the Centre has close links with the Departments of Philosophy and Political Economy.
