The YTL Centre's Law & Justice Forum: 'Rogue States'
Event Information
Description
We are delighted to invite you to 'Rogue States', YTL Law & Justice Forum in Politics, Philosophy & Law.
The liberal international order increasingly is under pressure. International institutions confront mounting global challenges, and they do so at a time when liberal Western democracies are retreating from the world stage and other actors—who have scant regard for international law and institutions—assert themselves. In this changing world order, a long-standing problem in international politics and law emerges with renewed urgency: rogue states and what to do about them.
This Law & Justice forum brings together scholars and practitioners to investigate rogue states in the changing international order. Who are the rogue states today, by what criteria, and who has the authority to designate them as such? What are the different ways in which rogue states operate? Some threaten nuclear retaliation while others interfere in elections. And what are the appropriate—morally, legally, and politically—responses: diplomatic and economic sanctions, democratisation (which sometimes amounts to influence in elections), and armed intervention?
