Andrea Jeftanovic is a Chilean fiction and non-fiction writer. She is considered one of the most prominent authors of her country. She is the author of the novels Theatre of War (2020) and Geografía de la lengua (Love in a Foreign Language, 2007), and of two volumes of short stories: No aceptes caramelos de extraños (Don’t Take Candy from Strangers, 2013) and Destinos errantes (2016).

Jeftanovic has Jewish and Serbian ancestors. She earned a PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, after studying sociology at the Catholic University of Chile. She has won a number of awards, including the Chilean Art Critics Circle Award, the Pen Translates Award, National Book and Reading Council Award and the Reading Council Award, for Theatre of Ward as the best book of the year.

She will talk about her creative process, how it feels to be read in other languages, and her upcoming projects.

Frances Riddle is a Spanish to English translator. She holds an MA in Translation Studies from the University of Buenos Aires and a BA in Spanish Literature.

Riddle's recent book-length translations include Cockfight by María Fernanda Ampuero, Slum Virgin, by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, and Violeta by Isabel Allende. Her translations, interviews, articles, and reviews have appeared in a variety of publications, including The White Review, Electric Literature, Asymptote, The Short Story Project, The Portable Museum, Palabras Errantes, and The Argentina Independent to name a few.

She will talk about her translation process of Andrea's novel and some of her favourite projects to date and would give some advice to future translators.

All those who book will be sent a link to join in an email from the library prior to the event. Thank you for attending our events and even more if you choose to make a donation (we use donations to support our libraries).

We look forward to welcoming you!
