Theatre and Pseudo-public Space Workshop
Led by Theatre and movement practitioners: Rebecca Bogue and Matthew Hahn
Pseudo-public spaces – squares, parks and thoroughfares that appear public but are actually owned and controlled by developers and their private backers – are on the rise in London and other British cities, as local authorities argue they cannot afford to create or maintain such spaces themselves.
As a result, these spaces (including the Kings Cross development, City Hall and many more) are no longer subject to ordinary local authority bylaws but governed instead by restrictions drawn up the landowner (which they are not obliged to make public) and usually enforced by private security companies. These include rules for “acceptable behaviour” on their sites and these can be altered at will.
So unless landowners choose to volunteer the information themselves, members of the public have no way of knowing what regulations they are bound by at some of London’s biggest spaces and whether activities they enjoy a legal right to in other public areas – taking photos, holding a political protest, having a nap or even simply sitting down - are permitted, or whether they will result in removal by security guards.
This pilot workshop will explore our experiences of these spaces as well as the spectrum of behaviour that may be deemed acceptable (or not) via the body, voice and space. How do we occupy these spaces as individuals or groups? How do we move through them? Can we come up with creative interventions that challenge this trend?
