Therapists of Colour working alongside Trans and Gender Diverse clients

Overview

A two-day in-person course for Therapists and Counsellors of Colour working with Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse clients.

We recognise how important it is to create opportunities for safety and kinship in training spaces. For the first time, we will be running a therapist of colour only training space for therapists of colour looking to work with trans, non-binary and gender diverse clients. While a large amount of the context will focus on Trans People of Colour, this training is open to therapists of colour of any gender/gender identity.

We view people of colour in this context as self determined, but please note this specific training is not open to white therapists. If you are a white therapist, please view our other trainings available here.

This two-day course has been created in response to demand for more in-depth and specialist learning from therapists, counsellors and mental health practitioners themselves, and to the need of the wider trans community for a pool of trans-knowledgeable therapists and counsellors to draw on.

The training is a mix of formal presentations, interactive exercises and reflective discussions delivered in a small group learning environment by two professional trainers who combine extensive therapeutic and trans-specific knowledge and practice.

This two day course will cover -

  • Gender diversity in the current social context
  • The treatment pathways and medical contexts relevant to transgender people and their families
  • Specific terminology, skills and knowledge relating to the use of language when working alongside trans and non binary people and understanding how the language is being shaped within communities
  • Gender Theory and how it can inform good practice in therapeutic work with trans people and their families
  • Theoretical models and psychotherapy practices that support work with trans and gender diverse people
  • Current dilemmas in practice with transgender and gender diverse people
  • Activities exploring experiences of race, gender and culture
  • Gender diversity through the globe
  • Exploring gender privilege
  • Tackling anti trans narratives

Important update: We require that all attendees either book on to our online CPD Introduction to Trans and Non Binary Awareness ahead of attending, or email us at training@genderedintelligence.co.uk to let us know if you have already gained foundational knowledge through prior training or lived experience.

Venue: North London at Bounds Green Scout Park. Unfortunately is not possible to attend online.

Times: Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th of February 2026, on both days 9:45 arrival for a prompt 10.00 start, close at 17.00

The course fee includes:

  • A course booklet, handouts, extensive list of links and online resources
  • Eligibility to join the GI Therapists and Counsellors Network
  • An attendance certificate
  • Lunch and refreshments on both days

We strongly recommend joining the network - it provides access to ongoing learning and support and also enables you to apply for listing in the Directory which is already bringing new clients to the therapists listed.

For: This course is for practising psychotherapists, therapists and counsellors, working in the fields of talking therapies (as opposed to physical therapies) and mental health practitioners.

You may already be working alongside people who might be described as gender variant, gender non-conforming or gender dysphoric in clinical settings, but who might describe themselves with a very wide variety of different terms including trans, transgender, a person with a trans history, non-binary, gender questioning, gender expansive, genderqueer, gender fluid or agender, or who otherwise have an experience of gender that doesn’t align with society’s expectations in some way.

The course is also for those interested in beginning work alongside gender diverse people.

Numbers: Around 15 participants.
